Senator Spilka Hosts Senior Health Fair

On Saturday October 22nd, Senator Karen Spilka hosted a health fair geared toward area senior citizens at Keefe Tech in Framingham. Before seniors went inside, they were encouraged to get free health screenings in the eye-mobile sponsored by the Greater Ashland Lions. Inside the trailer, seniors had the opportunity to get eye exams including a retinal exam, a hearing exam, and get their blood pressure taken.

The Hopkinton Police and Fire Departments will be holding a car seat inspection at the Fire Station on Saturday, November 5, from 1pm to 4pm. Stop by for a free car seat inspection by Nationally Certified Technicians. No appointment necessary!

National Drug Take Back Day October 29

On Saturday October 29, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Hopkinton Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

This effort is intended to bring national focus to the issue of increasing pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse.

  • The program is anonymous.
  • Prescription and over the counter solid dosage medications, i.e. tablets and capsules accepted.

Tobacco By-Law Now in Effect

The tobacco by-law, prohibiting the possession of tobacco products in a public outdoor place by a person under the age of 18, and approved by Town Meeting in May of this year, is now in effect.

Although it is illegal to buy or sell tobacco products to minors under the age of 18, it was not illegal for minors to use tobacco products.

“The new by-law supports the existing Board of Health regulation that prohibits the sale of tobacco to anyone under the age of eighteen,” says beFree Project Coordinator Jane Roche.

Medicare Changes for 2012

Medicare is the comprehensive health insurance plan for seniors 65 and older. Sometimes understanding the ins and outs of the system, as well as yearly changes, can be quite complex. Therefore, the Senior Center recently hosted a presentation devoted to educating residents on upcoming changes regarding Medicare.

The SHINE program, or Serving the Health Information Needs of Elders, is an organization dedicated to providing seniors with information regarding heath benefits.
