Leadership Academy Launches at Hopkinton Middle School

One hundred and ten eighth graders, members of the newly created ELC Leadership Academy attended their first meeting at the Hopkinton Middle School on Tuesday, March 1. Founded by science teacher Evren Gunduz, the Enjoy Life Club is a revolutionary program designed to educate and mentor students in the art of positive leadership.

The Franchonia Election at Hopkinton High

As part of Mike Franchock’s AP Language and Composition class at Hopkinton High School, students study politics, power and rhetoric; the art of using language effectively and persuasively. They do so in a very creative way, participating in a mock election campaign in a country called Franchonia, created by Franchock.

Superintendent Finalists Down from 5 to 4

In a press release today from Kim Pulnik, Director of Human Resources for the Hopkinton Public Shools, it was announced that Mr. James Jolicoeur, candidate for Superintendent of Schools, has withdrawn his candidacy. Jolicoeur has accepted a position with the Town of Leominster.

Hopkinton High School Mock Trial Team

The Mock Trial Program of Massachusetts is open to all public and private high schools in the state. At Hopkinton High, the Mock Trial Team is currently participating in trial simulations and faced off against Hopedale at the Milford District Court on Wednesday, February 16, 2011.

The team is divided into a Prosecution and a Defense team and Wednesday’s trial was the Prosecution team’s turn to argue their case. Just like a real trial, witnesses take the stand, are questioned and cross-examined and opening and closing arguments are presented.

School Committee Hears Additional Public Comment

With the Special Town Meeting and Election just a little over a month away the pace of the comments and suggestions about the new elementary school and redistricting is accelerating.

A dozen residents turned out for the February 17th School Committee meeting to hear fellow townspeople voice their opinions on the two interrelated topics. Those who did speak out addressed the committee during the public comment portion of the meeting.

Superintendent Search: Finalists Announced

The Hopkinton School Committee is pleased to announce that the Superintendent Search Screening Committee has identified five outstanding candidates for further consideration by the School Committee for the position of Superintendent of Schools. The thirteen member Screening Committee included representation from the School Committee, the district’s administrative office, building level administration, teachers, community representatives, students, and parents.

The School Committee held a mid-morning informational forum at the Senior Center on Friday February 11 for residents to learn more about the proposed new elementary school at Fruit Street. Before taking any questions, a brief video of Center School, pointing out the infrastructure problems and deficiencies and their educational impact was shown. More than a dozen residents attended and asked questions. The following is a summarized list of questions, comments and suggestions posed by the attendees.
