The Hillers lost 6-2 to the Bellingham Blackhawks last night in Franklin. Bellingham's Tyler Colacchio , the states leading scorer, had 4 goals. Freshman Michael Messier pick up his first Varsity goal and Senior captain Eric Guilmette added the other.

Residents Speak Out in Favor of Drama at the Middle School

School Committee members heard from several members of the community during the public comment period of their January 19 meeting. Parents and students alike were on hand to voice their objections to the proposal to eliminate the Middle School drama program and drama teacher Hallyann Gifford.

Selectmen Applaud Hopkinton 20/20 For Progress to Date

Members of Hopkinton 20/20, the public private economic development initiative, received rave reviews from the Board of Selectmen at their January 17th meeting as they came before the board to report their progress to date and to update the board on their current activities.

I’m very pleased,” said Michelle Gates. “It’s exactly what I was hoping we would gain.”

“I think it all comes together nicely,” said Brian Herr, “and I applaud what you are doing.”

Zio’s Quattro Coming to Hopkinton Square

Selectmen voted at their January 17th meeting to approve the liquor license for Zio’s Quattro, a new restaurant by Zio’s Bistro owners, Paul and Kim Winshman, to be built at Hopkinton Square located at the corner of West Main and South Street.

According to Winshman, the decision to build the new restaurant came after a meeting with the property developers, Chuck Joseph and Peter Markarian, in which both parties were in agreement about what they think will work at the South Street location.

The JV Hockey team took on a varsity laden Bellingham team last night at the North Star Youth Forum. The Hiller squad came out on the short side by a score of 8-2. Anthony Gemma had the first goal with an assist by Brandon Carty. Carty had the second Hiller goal on a backhand with a loose puck in from of the next. Tim Montgomery made some great saves in net.

Senate Passes Bill to Freeze Unemployment Insurance Premiums

Continuing a commitment to provide economic relief for businesses across the Commonwealth, Senator Karen Spilka (D-Ashland) announced Senate passage of a bill that freezes the unemployment insurance premiums paid by businesses. Without the freeze, the rate would increase by approximately $220 per employee, with the average business seeing payments jump from $715 to $935 for each worker.

Massachusetts Unemployment Rate Drops to 6.8%...Jobs Decline in December by 6,200

The Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported today that the total unemployment rate was 6.8 percent, down 0.2 of a percentage point from the November rate of 7.0 percent, and well below the national rate of 8.5 percent. It is the lowest monthly rate since December of 2008. The preliminary December estimates show a decrease of 6,200 jobs in Massachusetts, for a total of 3,234,500 jobs.

300th Anniversary Logo Winner Announced

The winner of the 300th Anniversary logo contest was announced by the 300th Anniversary Celebration Committee at their meeting last night and the winner is Kris Waldman, Executive Director of the Cultural Arts Alliance. According to committee chair Anne Mattina, there were a total of twelve entries and five judges from the community who were not committee members.

The 300th Anniversary Committee asks that the logo not be reproduced without permission from the committee. The committee can be reached by email at [email protected].

Hillers Girls Lacrosse Team Honored at State House

Representative Carolyn C. Dykema and Senator Karen E. Spilka were pleased to host the Hopkinton Hillers Girls Lacrosse team at the State House on January 4th to celebrate their 2011 Girls Lacrosse Division II State Championship.

The athletes were recognized for their achievements by both the House and Senate chambers and received citations to commemorate their remarkable season.

Representative Carolyn Dykema will be holding office hours throughout the 8th Middlesex District during the month of February. She will be in Hopkinton on Monday, February 27th from 5:30-6:30pm at the Hopkinton Public Library.
