Open House at Fruit Street Soccer Fields

Hopkinton's Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction, with Hopkinton Youth Soccer Association (HYSA), held an Open House and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the Fruit Street athletic fields on Monday, October 11. After several years of waiting, the two new artificial turf fields are now available for play. Listen to HYSA President Brian O' Keefe talk about the benefits of the turf fields and hear from Parks and Recreation Director Mike Preite as he recaps the process of getting the fields built. Former Board of Public Works Reviews Accomplishments

Eric Sonnett, Ron Clark and Ken Weismantel, former members of the Board of Public Works, reviewed and presented their accomplishments to the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday night. Elected in May, at the same time that Town Meeting voted to disband the committee, the three men served a total of three months on the board and met a total of seven times.

Hopkinton Girl Scouts Create Marathon Earned Patch

Five Hopkinton Girl Scouts have achieved something that few scouts have the chance to do; they have created an earned patch entitled “Go the Distance” that has been approved and made official by the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Massachusetts (GSEM). Now, due to the hard work of Amanda Rogers, Emma Galeucia, Sara Freedman, Avery McKenna and Chloe Smith, Junior, Cadette, Senior and Ambassador level scouts worldwide will be able to earn a patch based on criteria developed right here in Hopkinton.

Friends of the Library Plan Upcoming Events

Everyone needs a few friends, and the Library is no exception. Hopkinton’s “Friends of the Library” provides such friendship and a lot more. The Friends are a volunteer advocacy and support group that helps promote and support the Library. The Friends recently met on Thursday, October 7th for their regular monthly business meeting.

Papa Hemingway Spends an Afternoon at the Senior Center

Richard Clark, as Ernest “Papa” Hemingway, has paid a return visit to Hopkinton. Clark was in town earlier this year when he put on a stunning solo performance of the Harper Lee classic, “To Kill a Mockingbird”. On Tuesday, October 5th, he pitched his theatrical tent at the Senior Center and brought Ernest Hemingway to life for a fleeting hour as part of his “Keeping History Alive” program. The result, like the Atticus Finch portrayal a few months ago, was riveting.

National Merit Commended Students

Hopkinton High School is proud to announce that 15 students have been named Commended Students in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are Ryan Ashley, Peter Bransfield, Katherine Covino, Christopher Fowler, Joseph Fujiyoshi, Kelsey Jones, Christopher McCain, Kenneth Payson, Catherine Phelan, Christopher Rogers, Justin Roshak, Kelly Ryan, Allison Toth and Brienna Vos.

Center School Project Update

At Thursday night's School Committee meeting, Superintendent Jack Phelan reported on his meeting with town officials and representatives from AECOM, the consulting and engineering company that acquired Earth Tech, to solicit feedback on the plans for a new elementary school at Fruit Street. Two main issues were addressed; the groundwater discharge areas and the location of the spine road. Officials wanted to ensure that the new school, as designed, would not interfere with any of the groundwater discharge sites.

Selectmen's Meeting Preview
