Planning Begins for 2011 MLK Day of Giving Back

Don’t miss the opportunity to take part in what has quickly become a tradition in Hopkinton. Mark your calendars now for Hopkinton’s Fourth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Giving Back on Monday, January 17. In 2008, 400 Hopkinton students, families and friends participated in this community wide day of giving back. In 2009, the number grew to over 700 participants, and organizers are hoping to top that number for 2011.

Elementary School Building Committee Refines Plans

The Hopkinton Elementary School Building Committee pushed ahead last night as they continued their planning work on the proposed Fruit Street elementary school.

Schematic design reviews, budget refinements and Town Meeting timing made for a full schedule at the November 15th meeting, held at the school administration building on Hayden Rowe.

Scouting for Food Stocks Food Pantry

The annual Scouting for Food drive took place on Saturday, November 13. Beginning at 10AM, local Boy and Girl Scouts began picking up the bags of food left by residents' mailboxes. By noon time, the first wave of drop-offs at the Project Just Because Hopkinton Food Pantry was well underway. According to Townwide Coordinator Jack Ryan, this year's event was a much better experience that last year when the food had to be collected in the rain.

Veterans' Day Dinner Celebration 2010

Hopkinton veterans got a big spirited salute last Thursday night at the Senior Center.

The annual Veterans Day Dinner celebration for 120 local veterans featured speakers, raffles, a chicken dinner with a flag decorated sheet cake and lots of war stories.

Hopkinton's Library Site Now at Current Location

There has been in change in the site selection for the proposed new library. According to Permanent Building Committee (PBC) Chairman John Ferrari, work on the schematic plans for the site behind Center School has been halted, and all remaining funds will be put towards schematic plans for a new library at the current location.

Youth Commission Sets Goals and Initiatives

An updated set of goals and initiatives was one of the major agenda items at the recent Youth Commission meeting.

The October 10th meeting, held at Town Hall, continued an ongoing review process that will eventually result in a comprehensive set of activities and practices designed to promote a healthy environment for the young people of Hopkinton.

The meeting participants agreed on a list of six initiatives:

1. Secure Grants
2. Youth Activities
3. Volunteer Recruitment
4. Community Outreach
5. Web Update and Revision
6. beFree Projects

Hiller's Cleaners Plans Move to Hitchings Hardware Site

If George Vrahaliotis’ plans become reality, you’ll soon be able to do your grocery shopping and drop off your dry cleaning in one stop.

Vrahaliotis, the owner of Hiller’s Cleaners, wants to move his business from the 97 Main Street location to the site of the now vacant Hitchings Hardware building. Vrahaliotis plans to demolish the current building and build anew. His current site is too small and has too many walls to run efficiently says the Hopkinton businessman.

Highway Department Winter Parking Ban

The DPW wishes to remind all Hopkinton residents of By-Laws pertaining to the parking of motor vehicles during the winter months.

Traffic Rules and Orders, Town of Hopkinton, Article lV, Section 8 “It shall be unlawful for the driver of any vehicle, other than for an emergency, to park said vehicle on any street between the hours of 1:00am to 6:00am from November 15 through April 1.
