Some parents lose their confidence when their child learns fractions. Others don’t panic until algebra. But sooner or later, most parents must face math homework that they don’t understand.
So how do you help your teen when you don’t understand the math? Ask these questions:
~What do the directions say?
~What words do you not understand?
~Where do you think you should begin?
~What do you already know that can help you work through the problem?
~Can you show me what you’ve done so far?
~Can you go in before or after school for help from your teacher?
~Can we find help in your textbook or notes? Where?
~Would it help to draw a picture or make a diagram?
~What problems like this one have you done before?
~Can you tell me where you’re stuck?
~Can you call someone from your class to get help?
~Would it help to use a calculator?
~Where can we go on the Internet to find help?
~Will your teacher accept partial work?
~Should we tackle this when you’re not so tired?
