Three solar powered compactors, used to collect trash and recyclables, have been installed by the Hopkinton Department of Public Works (DPW). One is located at the high school playing fields, another at the recently completed Fruit Street Athletic area and a third at EMC Park.

Funded in full by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, Green Communities Division, the Big Belly solar compactors will hold almost 5 times what a normal 25 gallon can trashcan can hold, and will allow the Town to more efficiently process refuse and recyclable material.

“Hopefully, folks will see the benefits of these compactors and carry the message to family, friends and co-workers on how to live in a more energy efficient and sustainable way,” said Sustainable Green Committee Chair Nancy Dourney.

According to the press release from the Town Manager’s office, residents with questions about this project are encourages to contact the Hopkinton DPW at 508-497-9740.
