Teens value themselves as they are valued. Parents play a critical role in helping their kids develop the self-esteem they need to be successful in school and in life. Here are some things you can do to help build your teen's self-esteem:

~Accept. The most important message you as a parent can convey to your teen is that he is loved and accepted. Be attentive to his needs. Tell your teen you love him.

~Set clearly defined limits. Teens want to know what the boundaries are. As they grow older, they want their boundaries to expand. But they still want to know there are limits.

~Respect. Of course, you want your teen to respect you. But parents also need to show respect for their kids. That means using the same manners with your teen that you do with your friends. It also means allowing your teen to enter into family discussions. Teens should have a voice in making decisions that affect the entire family.
