I’m Mark Hyman, candidate for Planning Board, and I’m asking for your support.

My wife Carolyn, son Michael (14) and I became Hopkinton residents in 2013. Like many other families, we chose Hopkinton because of the wonderful character of the town and the award-winning schools. I want to help preserve those exceptional qualities for future generations by thoughtfully and proactively managing residential and business growth in town. Through its careful review of individual projects and by continuing to refine and implement the 2017 Master Plan, the Planning Board plays a vital role in achieving that goal.

I’ve helped Hopkinton address land use and zoning issues as a member of the Board of Appeals for four years, including serving as Chair since 2015. I’ve also served on the Zoning Advisory Committee since 2016 and attended seminars on Massachusetts land use laws and regulations. I first became interested in land use many years ago in Maryland, where I helped organize a group of residents to reach an agreement with a developer on adapting a nearby planned commercial development to balance residential and commercial concerns.

Outside of town government, I volunteer with the Hopkinton schools, support an ongoing event for the special needs community with the HPD, and am a member of the Hopkinton Sportsmen’s Association.

In my professional life, I serve as a senior counsel for AbbVie, a biopharmaceutical company, where I advise senior management and scientific teams on patent and other legal issues. With close to twenty years of experience, I’ve learned how to work with diverse groups to find creative resolutions to complex problems.

All too often, land use issues can become contentious and divisive, yet I believe that the vast majority of our town shares the goal of preserving Hopkinton’s character into the future. I’d like to bring my experience to the Planning Board to find productive ways of moving our town forward. Please join me at: https://www.facebook.com/markforhopkinton/

I respectfully ask for your vote on May 21st!
