The Hopkinton Police Department shared a post on social media this past Tuesday about a recent presentation they gave at the Hopkinton Senior Center to inform about various scams targeting the senior population and all others regardless of age group! The scam involves victims receiving emails, fake government phone calls and online requests which create an intense or stressful scenario giving it’s intended victim a sense of extreme urgency to act immediately or very quickly. Tuesday’s Hopkinton Police Department presentation was one of many given by various law enforcement authorities throughout our town, state and country about this increasing very concerning trend.
Unfortunately phone & online scams are an increasing concern for Seniors and all others around the country and the entire world with the rapid increasing amounts of A.I. technology. The growth of A.I. technology (Artificial Intelligence) has many great benefits but on the downside has significantly increased the concern and amount of scam activity on those of all ages throughout the globe. In an A.I. search conducted by HCAM News asking if A.I. technology has led to an increase in online and phone scams, the following answer or a similar result was received; “Yes. AI technology has drastically accelerated both the volume and sophistication of scams. Scammers now easily generate hyper-realistic phishing emails, bypass traditional spam filters, clone human voices, and create fake video profiles (deepfakes) to steal money and sensitive data”.
