Boston – Tuesday, December 22, 2015- Today, Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Commissioner Leo Roy announced that DCR’s Aquatics Program will offer two free lifeguard testing opportunities for prospective summer lifeguard candidates over the traditional winter school vacation. The tests will take place at the College of the Holy Cross Hart Center Pool in Worcester and DCR’s Connell Pool in Weymouth on December 26, 2015and January 2, 2016 respectively.

“Lifeguards play a vital role in the safe operation of DCR’s pools and beaches every summer,” said Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Matthew Beaton. “The free tests will allow students to get a head start on securing a good paying summer job well before the school year is over.”

All DCR Lifeguards must be at least 16 years of age, must complete lifeguard training, and must be certified in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

“An important part of DCR’s summer program is to offer safe, fun aquatic recreational opportunities for millions of visitors across the Commonwealth each and every summer,” said DCR Commissioner Leo Roy. “These two free trainings will be the first of many similar lifeguard training opportunities offered by DCR across Massachusetts in the coming months.”

DCR lifeguards staff 28 pools and 47 ocean fronts and inland beaches throughout the Commonwealth during the summer months.
