Lifeguards to Earn $15 Per Hour this Upcoming Season
BOSTON – The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) today announced that the agency is currently recruiting individuals to become a lifeguard at state park beaches, waterfronts, and deep water pools throughout the Commonwealth. DCR lifeguards are professional rescuers who are trained to prevent injuries from occurring, and to respond in the event of an emergency to help save a life. As part of a team, lifeguards must work together calmly and efficiently to manage crisis situations. Additionally, this year lifeguards will receive a nearly $2 increase in compensation to now earn $15 per hour.
“Every year, millions of people visit Department of Conservation and Recreation beaches, waterfronts, and pools seeking a respite from the summer heat in a fun, enjoyable environment,” said DCR Commissioner Leo Roy. “I’m proud of the agency’s lifeguards, who work incredibly hard in safeguarding the Department’s popular swimming locations and for their constant dedication to the public’s wellbeing.”
In order to be considered for a DCR lifeguard position, applicants must be at least 16 years of age, must be able to complete lifeguard training, and must be certified in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The agency trains and tests its lifeguards prior to opening designated swimming areas, and provides certification free of charge.
Furthermore, candidates must be able to complete the following:
· Timed 500 yard swim;
· Recover 10lb object in 9-12 feet of water; and,
· Pass a written test covering lifeguard procedures, first aid, and CPR procedures.
