Editorial: Supporting Jean Bertschmann for School Committee

By contributor,

My name is Troy Mick and I am writing in support of Jean Bertschmann for School Committee. I had the honor of working closely with Jean when we joined the school committee together 6 years ago, and I continue to be impressed with the amount of time and energy Jean gives to the schools both as a School Committee member and as a general volunteer to many other town committees.

Jean has been a critical part of advancing many of the important areas of focus for our schools over the last six years. Throughout her time on the school committee Jean has helped support the work of the ESBC to develop a solution to the educational and operational restraints Center School is facing, as well as helping to implement the recently adopted Strategic Plan. Jean has partnered with the Superintendent and leadership team to carefully plan for the growth that is approaching in our town and in our schools. Jean has worked with this team to help provide the children of Hopkinton with an outstanding school system that continues to rise in both state and national rankings. Jean has worked hard to help create initiatives to provide revenue for our schools, reduce energy costs, and provide an excellent value that the Hopkinton School System has been recognized for. Jean has thoughtful opinions and is not afraid to challenge ideas in hopes of coming to fiscally responsible decisions that will be good for the schools and the community.

Our town and school system will continue to face challenges in the years ahead-Jean’s experience, background and knowledge to understand where we have been and what needs to be done in order to move forward will be an important factor to help our schools continue to grow and succeed. Her relationships and knowledge not only of the schools but also other town committees and officials will be an asset as the school district works to improve and build upon the successes that already exist in our schools.

Jean’s dedication and collaborative insights are two of the many qualities that will make her an ideal candidate to continue on in her role on the School Committee. I value her commitment and her experience, and hope you will join me in voting for Jean Bertschmann for School Committee on May 18.
