Hopkinton Drug’s annual lecture series will be highlighted with a visit by Dr. Aubrey Milunsky MD, a Geneticist whose work with Genetics, Pediatrics, Pathology, and Obstetrics and Gynecology has earned him rights as one of the front-runners in the prevention and cure of disease using personal gene story research.
Having experience renowned enough to warrant him a piece on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” Milunsky’s mastery on the often misinterpreted field of genealogy will educate the public on ways to avoid, prevent, or detect genetic disorders before they become life threatening. His lecture will address cancer, heart disease, autism, mental illness, birth defects, neurologic disorders, diabetes, obesity, and more.
Scheduled to speak on October 19th at 7 PM at Hopkinton’s Senior Center, Milunsky will detail his findings during his extensive years of research in the field, including his work as Director and Professor at the Center for Human Genetics, Boston University School of Medicine and thirteen years as a medical geneticist at the Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital. Having led the team that first located the gene for X-linked lymphoproliferative disease, first cloned the PAX3 gene for Waardenburg syndrome, and first demonstrated the 70% avoidance of Spina Bifida afforded by folic acid supplementation taken in the three months prior to pregnancy and the three months after conception, Milunsky will have much to share. He has written over four hundred scientific communications and edited or authored 24 books; however, his best known publication is the 6th edition of his major reference work, Genetic Disorders and the Fetus: Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment.
The Hopkinton Drug lecture series runs from September to January and features eight prominent doctors and specialists who will speak pro bono. Milunsky, who is Board certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Clinical Genetics, will be the third lecturer in the series.
