The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) is excited to announced the Hopkinton High School girls’ basketball team as the winner of the 2020-21 MIAA Community Service Challenge! Members of the MIAA Student Advisory Committee reviewed the 68 incredible submissions before selecting the winner.

The Hopkinton High School girls’ basketball team executed a plan to serve dinner at a homeless shelter, Hotel Grace, in Worcester, Massachusetts. Eleven student-athletes met up to prepare the meal, drove the food to Worcester and helped serve it to those in need.

“Doing this project was a very valuable and rewarding experience for my team and I. It was our first time volunteering as a team and it definitely brought all of us closer together,” said senior captain, Lauren Murphy. “We had a great time making and serving the food for the people at Hotel Grace and we are so honored to receive this recognition. Like everything we did this season, it was a team effort through and through.”

"We couldn't be prouder of the girls and their commitment to giving back to their community,” expressed Hopkinton Athletic Director, Rich Cormier. “Their selfless act of getting together and preparing this meal for those in need speaks to their character and the togetherness they shared despite the challenges of this school year and their basketball season. Instead of focusing on what they've lost, they combined their efforts to give back and that is what makes them such a special group."

The MIAA is grateful for the new partnership with Team Up 4 Community (TU4C) that began in March 2021. The partnership allows schools to submit their projects online providing sports teams the opportunity to showcase community service projects demonstrating their commitment and impact in the community.

A total of 68 projects were submitted with 3,359 student-athletes participating in some type of community service project. In total, $44,846 was raised for charitable causes with 12,427 hours donated by MIAA student-athletes.

In addition, Malden Catholic was selected as the runner-up for their incredible Make-A-Wish event. Click here for the details of this service project.

Presentations of these awards will take place at Hopkinton High School and Malden Catholic in the coming weeks.

Thank you to all MIAA member schools and student-athletes who participated in this years’ service challenge.
