Spring can begin early in your garden with the inclusion of early bulbs and native woodland wildflowers called spring ephemerals. On Tuesday, January 20th, Joan Butler and Jana Milbocker will join us to present “Spring Ephemerals and Other Delights”. This lecture illustrates the delicate and often fleeting beauty of these spring blooming perennials such as Bloodroot, Jeffersonia, Hepatica and Epimedium. You’ll learn about their habitats, ideal growing conditions and unique adaptation, and see how they can be the stars of your early spring garden.

Joan Butler has been an enthusiastic gardener for over 30 years, believing gardens should invite you to linger in the world outside your door. The gardens surrounding her colonial home feature exciting plant combinations, dramatic horticultural specimens, and surprising playful touches. A water garden, statuary, and collections of hosta, heuchera and epimedium add to the beauty of the space. Joan is the immediate past Chairman of the Massachusetts Landscape Design Council, an accredited Flower Show Judge, and a horticulturalist at Weston Nurseries.

Jana Milbocker has a passion for landscape design and horticulture, and has been gardening on her 2-acre property in Holliston for over 20 years. The garden surrounding her Victorian home features over 140 varieties of trees and shrubs, perennial gardens, peony and rose beds, water features and shady retreats. Jana is interested in all aspects of design—spatial relationships, the interplay of light and shadow, color theory, texture, proportion, and plant combinations. Her professional experience includes 25 years as an art director and designer.

Our January 20th meeting will be held at the Faith Community Church, 146 Main Street, Room 233, in Hopkinton. Our general meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. The speaker portion starts at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. New members are welcome any time during our club year.
