Hopkinton Middle School took precautions this morning to a burning odor in the building. That building has since been cleared and determined safe. The below statement was released by Assistant Principal Ann Benbenek;

April 10, 2014

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Upon arrival to school at 6:35 a.m. this morning, staff members noticed a burning odor in the building. The fire alarm was activated and fire and police quickly responded. It was determined that the motor of an exhaust fan on the roof seized, heated up, and melted a belt resulting in the electrical and rubber smell. Currently, power to the unit has been shut off.

By 6:45 a.m., the fire department ascertained that there was no danger, however, it was determined that students would be housed in the Brown Gym until the all-clear signal was given.

At 7:55 a.m., students were able to begin the school day with minor adjustments to their class schedules.

Thank you,

Ann Benbenek

Assistant Principal
