HOPKINTON - A recent Boston Globe article (“The Price of a Drink”, July 21, 2013) identified Hopkinton as one of the MetroWest communities with the lowest daily usage of water per person, at 54 gallons. This is well below the State’s daily consumption goal of 65 gallons per person and almost half of Weston’s daily usage of 100 gallons per person.

The Hopkinton Conservation Commission and the Hopkinton Water Department would like to thank Hopkinton residents for their efforts in conserving our drinking water supply. These efforts help to preserve our groundwater aquifers and ensure that our community continues to have access to safe, clean drinking water, which is our most precious resource.

Tips for how residents can conserve water and save on their water bills include:

Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving can save 1 to 2 gallons per minute;
Shorter showers can save up to 2 to 4 gallons;
Find and fix leaks. Leaks in toilets, under sinks, or behind a washing machine may go unnoticed, can be significant, and also cause damage to floors and ceilings;
Replacing a dishwasher, washing machine or toilet with higher efficiency models can save significant water and money;
Avoid watering your lawn and garden during the day, because a lot of the water will evaporate. Water early in the morning or late in the evening;
Raise the blade of your lawnmower. Longer grass retains water better, requires less fertilizer, and competes better against weeds;
Adhere to municipal water restrictions; and
Consider using drip irrigation and/or water barrels.
