“It All Starts Here!” On Marathon Monday the town of Hopkinton will host the runners of the world for the 117th running of the B.A.A. Boston Marathon. Nearly 27,000 runners will cross the start line on their journey to Boston. These runners carry with them thousands of personal triumphs and accomplishments that have earned them the right to be part of this April tradition and we congratulate all the runners!
For the past year our dedicated team including public safety personnel, the Hopkinton Marathon Committee, Hopkinton Selectmen’s Office and the Boston Athletic Association has been working to develop a race day program that will assure an efficient and safe start for the 2013 Boston Marathon.
PLEASE NOTE:
- Roads in Hopkinton will close at 7:30 a.m.
- Roads in the Center of Town will close at 7:00 a.m.
- Roads are scheduled to reopen no later than 1:00 p.m.
- Roads used to support the Marathon will be posted NO PARKING and will be strictly enforced.
The Athletes’ Village will be located behind the High School and Middle School. This location provides runners with room to relax and stretch before they are called to the starting line.
Official buses from Boston will drop runners off at the high school. For those driving to Hopkinton, satellite parking will be provided at the Industrial Park on South Street and at the Hopkinton State Park off of Cedar Street. Shuttle service from the Hopkinton State Park will transport spectators to Main Street. Shuttle service from the Industrial Park will transport runners to the Athlete’s Village.
In order to make the starting process more efficient and enjoyable for all race entrants, the field of nearly 27,000 runners will be split into three waves of approximately 9000 runners each. Runners will be released from the Athletes’ Village in a managed and staggered procedure based on qualifying times. Runners will be directed down Grove Street to the starting corrals on Main Street between the start line and the intersection of Main Street and Rt 85. There will be NO corrals on Grove Street, however, the entire distance of Grove Street between the Middle School and Colella’s will be barricaded to keep runners from entering private property. Access to property on Grove Street will be restricted due to fencing.
An Ambassador Program will be in place to assist in directing the runners to their designated starting corrals. Water and additional port-o-johns will be staged in Colella’s parking lot to service runners moving into corrals on Main Street.
The Boston Athletic Association has retained the services of a company to be dispatched to handle any isolated sanitation issues. This service will be available on Monday and Tuesday afternoon.
