Ryan Dahlgren, a senior at Milford High School, has been selected as the recipient of the “MIAA Student-Athlete of the Month Award" for November 2014.

Ryan is a member of the Milford varsity golf and lacrosse team. This year was Ryan’s first year on the varsity golf team. “Instead of giving up and quitting, he spent three seasons with the JV team working on his game and striving to be a better player. His one goal was to someday make varsity. This year he tried out and achieved his goal to make the team. I couldn’t have been more proud of him and his efforts,” said head golf coach, Jason Potty. “His positive outlook, mental toughness and strong work ethic set the tone for a young team trying to build its identity. Ryan exemplifies what is truly means to be a teammate."

Since his sophomore year, Ryan has taken seven AP courses and excelled in all of them. AP American History, AP English and Language Composition, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, and AP Spanish. With this intense course workload, he is currently ranked third in a class of 276 and holds a G.P.A of 4.22.

Ryan is also a leader in his school community. Milford High School has a strong and successful Best Buddies Program that Ryan is a big part of. “On our golf team, we had a student with special needs and from day one Ryan took it upon himself to help this student-athlete succeed within our program. He took it upon himself to give him a daily ride to and from practice and to all team functions,” said Coach Potty. Some of the other programs Ryan is a part of include; student leadership, peer mentoring, National Honor Society, treasurer of C.A.R.E, microfinance secretary, Spanish National Honor Society and Junior State of America club. Even with all of the extra curricula programs, he can find time to balance his academic, athletic and work schedule.

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Student-Athlete of the Month Award is presented on a monthly basis to one male and one female student-athlete who display excellence in the areas of academics, athletics and community service. Students in grades 9-12 who attend MIAA member schools are eligible to receive the award. Monthly award winners will receive a certificate of recognition and be featured on MIAA.net.
