Planning Begins for 2011 MLK Day of Giving Back

By Michelle Murdock, Freelance Writer

Don’t miss the opportunity to take part in what has quickly become a tradition in Hopkinton. Mark your calendars now for Hopkinton’s Fourth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Giving Back on Monday, January 17. In 2008, 400 Hopkinton students, families and friends participated in this community wide day of giving back. In 2009, the number grew to over 700 participants, and organizers are hoping to top that number for 2011.

Sponsored by the Hopkinton Youth Commission, the event is planned and organized by a group of volunteers who are just now beginning to set the stage for the January 17th event. Activities are being planned and the committee is looking for new ideas for hands on volunteer activities.

The day will begin with a kick-off breakfast with a short program in honor of Dr. King’s legacy. The speaker for the morning will be Sarah Varadian of the Wee Care Organization. Varadian will tell her inspiring story about how she was able to help build schools for girls in Afghanistan.

But all of this cannot happen without advance planning. Volunteers are needed to ensure the event’s continued success, and all are welcome. Don’t wait, act now to be part of Hopkinton’s 4th annual MLK Day of Giving Back! MLKHopkinton@comcast.net for more information or to get involved.
