The statewide Amalgamated Transit Union Massachusetts Legislative Council has endorsed Karen Spilka for Congress. Comprised of 11 ATU Locals from across Massachusetts and representing over 8,000 members, Karen has earned their support because of her strong track record of supporting public transportation and her commitment to fighting for smart investments in our infrastructure in Congress.
“Karen worked hard for us and we are going to work hard to support her,” stated Gary Pires, Chairman of the Council. “She is a leader who is always looking for ways to help out and make government work for middle class families. Karen is who you call when you want something done; she doesn’t back down from a challenge and she has been a persistent advocate for public transportation.”
As state senator, Karen successfully changed an out-dated law that prevented communities from creating or joining Regional Transit authorities, allowing MetroWest to form a public bus system. Working with the RTA legislative caucus since its inception, she has helped secure millions of dollars in funding for state assistance to all Regional Transit Authorities. She has fought to control fare increases and to ensure that labor will have a place at the table for decisions on public transportation.
“Supporting public transportation just makes sense and I am so pleased to have the endorsement of the ATU Massachusetts Legislative Council,” said Karen. “Improving our bus and train systems makes it easier for working people to get to their jobs. It is good for the environment. Public transportation helps our elderty and disabled. And it is the kind of commonsense government investment that improves the quality of life for Massachusetts residents while creating and maintaining jobs."
This is a statewide union endorsement and ATU becomes the 18th labor organization to support Karen. Previously she has earned the endorsements of the UNITE-HERE New England Joint Board, the Roofers and Waterproofers Union Local 33, Laborers' Local 609, Laborers' Local 22, IBEW Local 1505, the Boston Carmen's Union Local 589, the Building Wreckers Local 1421, American Postal Workers Union Local 4553, UFCW Local 1445, UFCW Local 791, UFCW Local 328, the Mail Handlers Local 301, Laborers’ Local 380, Laborers' Local 1116, Laborers' Local 1156, and Laborers' Local 151. She also has the backing of the Central Massachusetts AFL-CIO.
