Letter to Parents from Assistant Superintendent Mary Ann DeMello:

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Over the past several months, we have been reviewing our safety protocols and procedures to ensure that we are doing everything we can to provide a safe environment for our students and staff. For many years now, the Hopkinton Public Schools has worked collaboratively with the Hopkinton Fire Department, Police Department, and other local and state agencies to prepare for emergency situations. We have thoughtful protocols in place and have adopted many national guidelines for responding to various emergency scenarios.

As you know, an important aspect of thorough preparation is practice. In the immediate aftermath of the events at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the district respectfully postponed several practice drills planned for the winter months. During the month of April, we will be resuming our drills to once again practice different emergency situations. Please continue to talk with your children to reinforce the importance of following directions during any and all emergency alerts.

In recent months, we have received some inquires asking to outline our safety measures. We are committed to operating in a transparent manner; however, when it comes to safety, there are responses and protocols that we are not at liberty to share in order to maximize the safety measures we have in place. The Hopkinton Public Schools will continue to coordinate with various local and state departments to practice, review, and revise our protocols to seek new ways to improve our safety measures, while maintaining a welcoming environment for our school community.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

Mary Ann DeMello
Assistant Superintendent
