BOSTON, MA— The Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress (MDSC) honored Senator Karen E. Spilka (D-Ashland) as the 2017 Legislative Advocate of the Year, in recognition of her tireless support for the Massachusetts Down syndrome community.

The award is an original painting created by self-advocate Michael Avakian of Bedford and was presented to Senator Spilka in her State House office on Wednesday.

“I am honored to be recognized by the Down syndrome community with this award and beautiful painting,” said Senator Spilka. “I know from firsthand experience how important disabilities advocates and service providers are for our loved ones, and that’s why I have always fought to make sure everyone has the tools and opportunities they need to realize their full abilities.”
