15th Annual Sharon Timlin Memorial 5K Race/Walk and Family Fun Day
Hopkinton High School, 90 Hayden Rowe Street, Hopkinton, MA
Saturday, June 16th
8:30 AM - Noon

Why We Run: Sharon Timlin, mother of Mike Timlin, a retired pitcher for the
Boston Red Sox, succumbed to ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou
Gehrig’s Disease) in 2002. The race/family day was organized in her memory
and to benefit all who suffer from this disease. ALS is a progressive and
eventually fatal illness with no known cure or effective treatment. ALS is
particularly cruel because victims are aware of their fate as they gradually lose
the ability to control their muscles, to communicate, and eventually to breathe.
Event Director Abbie Rosenberg who started the race in 2004 after her friend
was diagnosed with ALS says, “Once you have known someone with ALS, you
realize why it's so important that we find a cure".

In 2004, the Sharon Timlin 5K Race/Walk raised about $60,000. Fifteen years
later, this remarkable event has raised over $1.5 million to benefit a cure for ALS.
The race raises money for The Angel Fund, a non-profit, 100% volunteer-run
organization, dedicated to helping fund research focused on finding a cure for
ALS, with 100% of the funds raised going to the Cecil B. Day Laboratory at
UMass Medical School, where worldwide groundbreaking research takes place
daily.

Mike Timlin is invested in the race to honor his mother, and has attended the
race every year.
