For the second exhibition of its second season, the new Hopkinton Center for the Arts Gallery presents two established artists who have developed their work in the nearby Holliston Mill studios. "Two Degrees of Expression", featuring paintings by Arlene Chaplin and woodcuts by Laurie Leavitt, runs October 17 through November 25 at the HCA Gallery, 98 Hayden Rowe St., Hopkinton, MA. A reception for the artists and the public will be held at the gallery on Friday, October 21 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.

In Arlene Chaplin’s acrylic and mixed media work, painterly incidents swim in fields of color. These clusters of vibrant activity floating in chromatic space are deeply influenced by Chaplin’s early clinical science work microscopically inspecting cells.

In Collecting More Thoughts (2013), capsules of dots, streaks, and rivulets, encased in pale green, meander through an expanse of yellow gold, like stray observations passing through consciousness.

Laurie Leavitt, on the other hand, uses the crisp medium of the woodcut for ruminations on the environment around us, particularly the life of trees, which she often presents as curtains filling the space before us. Carving into a block of wood, she depicts such outward forms of living wood as a towering phalanx of birches or the impossibly twisty branches of a gnarly fruit tree.

In Rail Trail (2016), a squadron of slim, leafless black trunks screen late day sun that peeps through to glow on the snow bank in front of us. Edges of orange glint at our feet and on the horizon as the sun sinks.
