This series is for the merging of minds and souls of poets, musicians and other performing artists... as well as those simply coming to listen.  We provide a forum for a variety of talented writers and performing artists to share their words and get people awakened and excited about the diversity of voices, perspectives and insights expressed through the art form of poetry, song and spoken word.

This program is offered jointly by myself a host/ producer and by HCAM Station Manager Jim Cozzens. Admission is free but there is a passing of the hat for the features. There are very talented poets and musicians on board for this coming season. You can sign up for reserved seating and open mic below. Open mic slots are limited and available on a first come first serve basis. (More info)

No, they don't gather in some hip little cafe crowded with creatures of the night. But all the passion and prose of a fervent literary event can be found at the free Wake up and smell the poetry sessions held on Saturday morning each month at the HCAM-TV Studio in Hopkinton. --The Boston Globe, October, 2009

 10.16.10

After a three month summer hiatus, HCAM Studios is gearing up for the next new season (the 5th; of some very diverse and impressive talents of the literary.... including poets, writers, song-writers and spoken word artists.

The show.... originally formed to get poets, writers and mainstream community together to listen and honor the art of local poetry, has evolved into a vibrant, artistic community where poetry readings are shared on the same stage with original songs and spoken word stories... showing that the literary arts can in fact mix and that talented writers of different art-forms and of different levels of experience (beginner to professional) can enhance and inspire one another...much like what takes place at the Dodge Poetry Festival.

The monthly attendance of those coming to share at the open mic as well as listen has been growing and this past season has ranged from 30-70... showing that people indeed are waking up at least once a month on the early side of a Saturday morn to catch some very talented writers who share their art-form be they guest features and/or open mic participants. Each show is also filmed and later edited for a 90 minute monthly cable television program that can be viewed on local cable television as well as on some distant stations and online.

In addition, Ashley was selected in March along with several other young musicians to perform at the legendary Hard Rock Café in Boston as part of a talent showcase, and was also selected by radiolicious.fm (Regent Broadcasting) as a runner up in their “Elite Artists Series”, gaining her a personal radio station for one year  . Bethel Steele is an emerging singer-songwriter in the Boston folk community. Bethel has released 2 CDs, a full-length studio album “Come Home” (2009) and a self-recorded solo EP “Beautiful Woman” (2007). Steele’s Americana/country-inspired music first had it’s debut in the Hudson Valley, New York, followed by a move to Boston three years ago. Bethel’s music has been described as “hard driving rhythmic guitar, with a powerful stage presence and a voice reminiscent of the quality of Joan Armatrading” (Dan Zampino and Angela Masciale fellow performers on the Boston folk circuit). Steele has performed all over the East coast and has been showcased as a solo artist and as an opening act for nationally- and regionally-touring artists. Bethel’s CDs are available at Bethel’s website, CDBaby.com, and iTunes.

Guest features for this program are selected based on their talent as both a writer and in their ability to deliver poetry, stories and songs as well as  thematic content, diversity of style, audience appeal  and genuine interest and ability to connect with the audience (both in studio and on air). We receive many inquiries regarding eligibility of feature spots and although most features are selected based on advance program topics and themes, interested applicants are welcome to email feature press kit and inquiries to poetry@hcam.tv or to HCAM Studios, 77 Main Street, Hopkinton Ma 01748. Open Mic Information:
HCAM Studios offers a supportive and professional setting for open mic where contributing writers and artists can share their words of poetry, song or story while being filmed before a live audience. There is a limited sign-up and a limit of four minutes per open mic contribution. Please bring material suitable for sharing on public television and sign a release form if you would like to be considered for inclusion on the televised program. Participants are encouraged to sign up in advance at poetry@hcam.tv as open mic spots can be limited with attending audience ranging from 20-50 each month.

People come from near and far sharing poetry, spoken word and songs, some for the first time and some who are seasoned writers/performers. Regardless of experience, those who have performed at the open mic in the last three seasons have traditionally offered their best for this friendly and professional setting. This has resulted in a showcasing of a very special blend  of impressive talents within each month's program so that most performances are included in either the monthly "Wake up..." series or the "All Open Mic" program.

If you are interested in reserving an open mic spot or simply in reserving a seat to watch as audience, please sign up above.
