This poetry series is for the merging of minds and souls of poets, musicians and other performing artists as well as those simply coming to listen.  We provide a forum for a variety of talented, accessible and connecting poets to share their words and to get people excited about the diversity of voices, perspectives and insights expressed through the medium of poetry.

This program is offered jointly by myself as host/ producer and by HCAM Station Manager Jim Cozzens. Admission is free but there is a passing of the hat for the features. There are very talented poets and musicians on board for this coming season. You can sign up for reserved seating and open mic below. Open mic slots are limited and available on a first come first serve basis. (More info)

No, they don't gather in some hip little cafe crowded with creatures of the night. But all the passion and prose of a fervent literary event can be found at the free Wake up and smell the poetry sessions held on Saturday morning each month at the HCAM-TV Studio in Hopkinton. --The Boston Globe, October, 2009

2.20.10 - FEATURING Women Poets of Light and Dark and Singer-Songwriter duo Lori Diamond and Fred Abatelli

On Saturday morning , February 20th at 10:30 am guest features will include three women poets who write about the dark and light side of life. These poets will share samples of their writing that focus on topics such as the rude truth about Facebook, a loved one's onset of Alzheimer's Disease and looking down upon a rat contemplating mortality... when stuck in the bottom of a trash barrel. Following these features of literary light and dark, singer-songwriter duo Lori Diamond and Fred Abatelli will smoke things up by performing a set of their original blues/jazz/folk fusion of original songs.

An open mic will follow for poetry, songs and spoken word. Hope to see you there!

Dianne Bilyak is an author and humorist who writes creative non-fiction stories that weave together the dark, poignant and hilarious moments of life. Her poems, interviews, and stories have been published in a number of books and journals. She was copy-editor on the book Such Sweet Thunder, Views on Black American Music. A co-founder of ALL Gallery (ALL) in New Haven she also served as Literary Programming Director there in 2003. She has been a manuscript reader for the Yale Series of Younger Poets and Alice James Books and is currently the poetry editor of Peregrine literary magazine. Currently, Dianne is also completing a book project based on her interviews with poets such as Li-Young Lee, Coleman Barks, Carolyn Forché, Jane Hirshfield, Charles Simic, Kazim Ali, Fanny Howe, Joy Harjo, and Nikky Finney.

Kate Connors has worked as an editor, writing coach, SAT Prep instructor and college instructor. As poet, non-fiction writer and free lance newspaper columnist, Kate's poetry is inspired by the sounds and images in poems by Mary Oliver, Wendell Berry, Denise Levertov and Jane Kenyon . Kate's writing is also inspired by being an avid reader of novels -- and willingly abandons reality to inhabit the worlds created by writers from Virginia Woolf to sue Miller, Anne Tyler, Jane Smiley and A.S. Byatt.

Leah Martell grew up in Sofia, the capitol and the largest city in Bulgaria . She emigrated to the United States several years before the Iron Curtain fell. After moving to the USm Leah thought -- "new country, new freedom of choice, I will be a writer". She studied English Writing at Penn State where she learned English mostly. Leah adds "My plan didn't come true. I am earning a living as a bio-statistician (a mouthful and a conversation stopper)". However Leah continues to write poetry and has been a feature reader when not at her day-job ...crunching numbers for science.

Lori Diamond and Fred Abatelli have played in bands of many genres including Acoustic, Rock, Jazz, Folk, Blues and Motown. Lori teamed up with Fred in 2007, after meeting on Myspace. Together, they offer a culmination of influences such as Norah Jones, Joni Mitchell, John Coltrane and Eric Clapton. The wonderful result of this duo is a heartfelt, Adult Contemporary style, infused with Jazz, Pop, Folk and Blues. With Fred's help, Lori wrote and released Mystery, which made its debut to a standing ovation at Amazing Things Arts Center in Framingham, Mass in 2009. Currently, Lori and Fred are enjoying a full performance schedule and plan to collaborate on a new CD in the coming year.

We receive many inquiries regarding eligibility of feature spots and although most features are selected based on advance program topics and themes, interested applicants are welcome to email feature press kit and inquiries to poetry@hcam.tv or to HCAM Studios, 77 Main Street, Hopkinton Ma 01748. (directions)

Open Mic Information:
HCAM Studios offers a supportive and professional setting for open mic where contributing writers and artists can share their words of poetry, song or story while being filmed before a live audience. There is a limited sign-up and a limit of four minutes per open mic contribution. Please bring material suitable for sharing on public television and sign a release form if you would like to be considered for inclusion on the televised program. Participants are encouraged to sign up in advance at poetry@hcam.tv as open mic spots can be limited with attending audience ranging from 20-50 each month.

People come from near and far sharing poetry, spoken word and songs, some for the first time and some who are seasoned writers/performers. Regardless of experience, those who have performed at the open mic in the last three seasons have traditionally offered their best for this friendly and professional setting. This has resulted in a showcasing of a very special blend  of impressive talents within each month's program so that most performances are included in either the monthly "Wake up..." series or the "All Open Mic" program.

If you are interested in reserving an open mic spot or simply in reserving a seat to watch as audience, please sign up above.
