2011: A Year in Review

By Stephanie Kane, News Producer

As 2011, comes to a close , it's safe to say that it was quite the year in Hopkinton. We said goodbye to some familiar faces and welcomed in some new ones as well. There were plenty of activities, events and annual traditions, some that have been around for over a decade, that brought the entire community together. Some businesses were honored for their long-standing commitment to serving the community, as others were being torn down and then re-built, while another laid down the foundation for the future.

Hopkinton also made its way onto the statewide, national, and even international stage with its many contributions to the community at large. We watched as two local entrepreneurs were chronicled by Chronicle. We were impressed as we learned that just because it starts here doesn't mean that it ends here, with the formation of a relationship with Xiamen China. And speaking of starting here, we were captivated as over twenty five thousand runners from across the world started their journey in Hopkinton for the one hundred and fifteenth running of the Boston marathon.

It was also a big year in High School sports. The Cheerleaders won the Division 2 State Championship, and will soon go on to Florida to compete in Nationals. Both the Girls and Boys basketball teams got to showcase their skills like the pros at the state semi-final tournament which was held at the Garden. And Sophomore Ryan Sullivan made school history by setting a new record for home runs in a single season, with a total of ten, surpassing the previous record by two.

But the year was not without some healthy debate and controversy, whether it be from an actual political debate, trying figure out the best way to structure the school system, or from deciding on the value between safety and tradition.

We also weathered not one, but two major weather disasters, with Hurricane Irene in August, which resulted in a delay of the start of school, and Snow-tober, which postponed trick-or treating by a full week.

The HCAM Studio was a busy place too in 2011. We met an aspiring actress with a message, several war heroes, and some ambitious campers who produced a movie. Punky Drawe kept us up to date on "All Things Senior Center", and Dr. Jim Kenealy gave us many informative tidbits on how to stay healthy year-round.

For the entire HCAM team, I'm Stephanie Kane, wishing you and your family a happy and healthy 2012!
