By Michelle Murdock, Freelance Writer

Twenty-eight teams of four to six runners participated in the Run Around Hopkinton Marathon Relay Race on Sunday October 2nd. The winning team, "Not This Worm", led by captain Chris Gooley finished with a final time of 2:44:40.

The event kicked off at the high school track early in the morning and team members proceeded through the sixlegs of the relay throughout the day cheered on by family, friends and their team members.

According to one of the event organizers, Sue Constanza, who spent the day coordinating the runners and directing traffic, setting up the logistics for the six leg relay takes a lot of time and effort. But for Constanza it’s all worth it as the race raises money for the Tyler Jay Lary Memorial Fund and helps to raise awareness for teen suicide and depression.

Starting and finishing at the high school, the relay consists of 6 different legs ranging from 3.5 miles to over 5 miles per leg, and runs through different areas of town, including portions of the Loop road, the high school track, Clinton street and the YMCA.

Along the way, .team members completing their leg pass a bracelet.to the next team member who is waiting to start the next leg of the relay. New this year, for those who would prefer to walk, there was the chance to participate by walking 26 laps at the high school track.

Kicking off at 9am, the last runners finished between just after 2pm in the afternoon, and several teams stopped at the finish line for team photos.
There was a lot of cheering for the Grady Bunch, a team of teachers from the middle school led by assistant principal Mary Ellen Grady, who was hugged by Vicki Lary after finishing the last leg. The team’s official finishing time was 4:15:18.
