A Conversation with the Chairman of the Ballot Question Committee

By Michelle Murdock, Freelance Writer

HCAM News talked with Cindy Bernardo, Chairman of the Ballot Question Committee for the New Elementary School at Fruit Street, to talk about what a ballot question committee is, why she formed the committee and what she hopes to accomplish.

"We formed the committee to show our support for the new school at Fruit Street that is going to be proposed at the Special Town Meeting in March," said Bernardo.

Bernardo says she and her other committee members, Esther Driscoll, Amy Ritterbusch and Tara Sanda, wanted to be able to work with the School Committee to help communicate the need to replace Center School and why it's a good time to build a new school at Fruit Street.

According to Bernardo, the committee is in good shape and has recruited a good number of volunteers to help them spread their message. While working hand in hand with the School Comittee, the Ballot Question Committee is taking a different approach to reach residents and will be conducting neighborhood coffees. School Committee members will attend the coffees, but they will be held and arranged by the Ballot Question Committee.

"We're taking more of a 'coffee approach'", said Bernardo. "This will be in someone's home and more specifically directed to neighborhoods."

The committee plans to hold three coffees a week beginning on January 16 and continuing through March 16 in various neighborhoods throughout town. Coffees are planned for Sunday evenings at 7PM, Monday mornings at 10:30AM, and Tuesday evenings at 7PM.

The committee is accepting donations, but only in small amounts to help cover any minimal costs that may be incurred for mailings. For more information, visit their website www.buildingforhopkinton.org
