Freshman Begin School Year with Laptops

By Stephanie Kane, News Producer

The 1-1 Laptop Program at Hokinton High kicked off this week as incoming freshman and their parents attended training programs to prepare for the upcoming school year. The program requires that each ninth grader have access to a laptop, either by utilizing an already purchased one, using one provided by the school, or by leasing an Apple MacBook from the school.

Throughout the end of August, the High School offered training seminars to help orient freshmen and their parents on how use their laptops as well as to go over proper care for them.

With having the laptops comes accountability. Students must bring the laptop fully charged in a zipped case to class each day. Students are also responsible for backing up their data as well as keeping the computer in their lockers when not in use. If a laptop is damaged or stolen, it is the responsibility of the student and parent to address the situation. Laptops leased from the school are property of the Hopkinton Public School System until paid off. Principal Alyson Geary says that although the laptops are a valuable classroom tool, there will be instances when teachers don't want students using them.

For more information about the 1-1 laptop initiative including more details on proper protocols for the laptops, visit the 1-1 laptop site, which can be accessed the High School's homepage.
