Hopkinton Education Foundation Golf Ball Drop

By Stephanie Kane, News Producer

It was raining golf balls during the Hopkinton Education Foundation's (HEF) annual Golf Ball Drop fundraiser on June 10th. The event featured other high flying activities such as photos in a hot air balloon by sponsor Re/Max, and balloon painting. But the big draw of the evening was the golf ball drop itself. Prior to the event, the HEF sold golf balls that were each individually numbered. The balls were mixed together in a bucket as they awaited being dropped from atop a crane from Consigli Construction to see who's ball could land closest to a hole marked on the ground.

After the balls were measured, the winners were announced. The big winner was Lisa DRienzo who won $1,000 after her ball landed in the hole. And at 105.5 inches away from the hole, Ruth Ann Cote won $100 for having her golf ball land furthest away.

This year, the HEF sold close to 1,000 golf balls and raised around $9,000 from the event. Money the HEF raises goes toward funding grants for educational programs at the schools. Recently, the HEF funded 6 grants totaling over $77,000 for the upcoming school year, including one for $37,000, the largest amount ever given out by HEF, to Middle School Principal Alan Keller.
