Hopkinton, Get Ready for Scouting for Food November 2

By Stephanie Kane, News Producer

Every year, over 500 Boy, Girl, and Cub Scouts join together to help Hopkinton families in need through the Scouting for Food drive, which collects items for Project Just Because. Last year, the scouts collected over 6 tons of supplies for the food pantry and are hoping to surpass that total. Donations raised from scouting for food can help Hopkinton residents provide for their families throughout the winter months.

And this year in particular, Scout Leader Laura Hanson says that the need to collect supplies is great. Currently, the shelves at Project Just Because, which are typically stocked full with items, are significantly emptier than in years past.

The scouts are looking to collect a variety of nonperishable food and household items. All items MUST have an expiration date of January 2014 or later.

New this year, in order to be more environmentally conscious, the scouts will not be distributing plastic bags. Instead, residents are asked to supply their own bags. On Saturday October 26th, the scouts will be dropping off door hangers as a reminder to residents about the drive. And on the following Saturday, November 2nd, residents are asked to leave any items that they wish to donate in bags or boxes outside by their mailbox for the scouts to pickup. There are also additional drop-off locations at both Colella's Supermarket and at Price Chopper. Or, items can be dropped off directly at Project Just Because.
