Hopkinton Heroes Recognized

By Michelle Murdock, Freelance Writer

This year the HPTA received thirteen essays in their 4th Annual Hopkinton Heroes Essay contest and the judges were so moved by all of the essays, and by the extraordinary efforts of the heroes, that all thirteen were recognized.

The heroes and the students who nominated them gathered together at the Marathon Restaurant for the official recognitions. After viewing a tape version of their essay, produced in the HCAM Studio, each hero was awarded a certificate. Included in the group of heroes for this year was a music teacher, a firefighter, a bus driver and Children's Services Librarian Denise Kofron.

My Hopkinton hero is Denise Kofron (a.k.a Mrs K), at the library.
I chose this lady because she has made a difference in the community, particularly the children. Mrs. K has helped kids read and write. She provides fun shows to occupy kids, for example puppet shows, crafts and story time and has fun themes for the holidays. These are just a few of ways Mrs. K entertains young minds, and draws children to the library. I know she has taught me a lesson to let my imagination wander. She knows the books so well, she will know what you’ll enjoy. Mrs. K has helped me many times choose just the right book. By making going to the library fun, I think more children will read books. That is why I have chosen Mrs. K.

"I work in a place where I am surrounded by heroes everyday," said Kofron. "On the shelves are people like Abraham Lincoln and Jonas Salk and Neil Armstrong and Navy Seals, so to be considered a hero is really a quite an honor. But I do have a poster hanging children's room in the library that says the greatest heroes are readers, so I think the greatest heroes are the kids who come in all the time and their parents that read to them."
