Hopkinton Remembers 9/11

By Michelle Murdock, Freelance Writer

“Let’s think about those who lost their lives and those who put their lives on the line.”

These were the opening words by Post Adjutant Mike Whalen to members of the Hopkinton Police Department and to the crowd of Hopkinton residents, young and old, gathered at the Town Gazebo on Sunday, September 11, 2011 to honor and remember the events of September 11, 2001.

And remember is what former selectman and American Legion Post Commander Eric Sonnett did as he spoke to the crowd about the events of that day, recalling where he was when he first heard about the terrorists driving a plane into the World Trade Center towers and his disbelief when he was told that the towers were gone. Sonnett also spoke about the effects of that day.

“Since 9/11 we’ve been at war,” said Sonnett. “And as a result, we feel less secure today. We feel more angry, we have less personal freedom and we no longer trust that everything will be all right as we did before 8:45am on September 11, 2001.”

But we can remember. Listen to the HCAM News video segment for more of Sonnett's speech.
