Hopkinton Scouts Learn about Citizenship

By Michelle Murdock, Freelance Writer

At a recent Pack meeting for Hopkinton's Scout Pack 4, local scouts got together to make care packages for soldiers overseas, sample some Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) and listen to resident Ted Hoyt talk about his exeriece as a Green beret.

"What we're really trying to do is teach them about citizenship at two different levels," said Scout Master Bob Murchie.

At the first level, the meeting used soldiers as an example of citizenship at the adult level. Hoyt told the scouts how his scouting skills helped him when he served in the Army. He encouraged the boys to study and learn, especially skills such as camping skills, how to build a fire and identify poison ivy.

"It's a lot of fun," said Hoyt, "and it will help you do a lot, even if you don't go into the Army.

At the second level, the goal was to show the scouts what they could do now. Care packages for five troops with ties to Hopkinton were identified and care packags containing items such as candy, batteries for iPods and powdered drink mixes were packed up to be sent overseas.

The highlight of the evening for some was to sample MRE's or Meals Ready to Eat, allowing the boys to experiene first hand what our soldiers overseas get to eat.

According to scout Ethan Jones, the pound cake had a little too much lemon, but other scouts found the meals surprisingly good.

"It tasted like chili and chicken together and it tasted spicy, but it was really good," said Aidan Weck.

"It was surprisingly good," agreed Aren Arakelian.

And most important of all, the scouts left with a feeling of having done something to help others and showing what they could do now to be good citizens.

We're making packages to send to the great men who are protecting our people," said Olin Sivo.
