Local Dentist Offers Free Sealants for Children

By Michelle Murdock, Freelance Writer

Watch the HCAM News video to learn where your child can receive free dental services as part of the Fall for Smiles program.

Did you know that recent surveys found that more than one-third of those who regularly visit the dentist have cut back? While this might be understandable with our current economy, .routine dental visits play a vital role in preventing oral and systemic disease and keeping future healthcare costs down.

Because of this, Oral Health America launched its second annual Fall for Smiles campaign that aims to remind the public about the importance of regular dental care. One local dentist participating in the progam is Dr. John Zarrella in Ashland who says early preventative care is very important.

HCAM News stopped by the office to learn more about the program and what services are being offered. Our first stop was a visit with Dental Hygienist Catarina Grillo who explained the services being offered, which include sealants and fluoride, and their benefits.

"We're going to be doing sealants for children six years of age and older, for their six year molars," said Grillo. "Sealants are a really good preventative procedure that we do so that the grooves in the back teeth that normally get cavities are protected. It's a really easy preventative measure."

According to Grillo, children who have sealants and fluoride treatments done tend to have less cavities and better health. It's also less costly for the parents.

"It's a piece of cake compared to having a filling," said Grillo and having the kids come into the dentist at a younger age before they have any problems, reduces any anxiety they may have.

We also got to meet Dr. Zarrella who spoke about why he chose to donate his services.

"This is just another way for us to help again. You really don't want kids to grow up with a lot of cavities and having bigger problems," said Zarrella. "So if you can see them earlier to do prevention, they are not going to need things like crowns down the road. It's a great way for us to help their situation, and it's a great way for us to give back."

The Fall for Smiles program at Dr. Zarrella’s office is Friday, October 21st from 2 – 5PM. If you have a child who needs sealants and fluoride, contact the Office Manager Christa Allen at 508-881-1280. Appointments are also being booked through the Ashland Community Center, located at 162 West Union Street, or by calling 508-881-0140.

Zarrella's office expects to have appointments for up to 18 patients on October 21st, but will open up another session if the first event fills up.

"We're the only dental office in New England participating in the Fall for Smiles program," said Allen, "so it's a big thing for us."

Dr. Zarrella’s office is located at 171 Main Street in Ashland, in the professional building behind John Stone’s Inn.
