One thousand seven hundred and thirty-nine (1739) voters made it to the polls on Monday, May 16th, representing about 18% of Hopkinton's registered voters. In the two contested races, Brian Herr was elected to the Board of Selectmen and Nancy Burdick and Scott Aghababian will be serving on the School Committee.

HCAM News was broadcasting live on Monday night and had the opportunity to talk with some of the candidates and other residents waiting for results. Although turnout for this year's election was low, former selectman Eric Sonnett said he was not surprised.

"There's no overrides or anything that typically brings people out. We only had two contested races," said Sonnett. "It didn't get the energy that most town elections get, but we did get 1,739 people and when you compare that turnout to other towns, we still had a good turnout.

Mike Torosian had a chance to talk to two of the candidates that turned out to be winners, Republicans Scott Aghababian and Brian Herr. Aghababian talked about districting and Herr about residents with different ideas working together for the good of the town.

"I'm absolutely against districting," said Aghababian. "It kiind of came to the forefront during the whole issue with the Fruit Street school. but win or lose for me, I am going to keep fighting against districting in Hopkinton because I just don't think it is right for this town."

"People with different ideas should be able to hang out together and talk together and discuss issues together," said Herr, " and continue to work together to find solutions that most people can agree with."

Nancy Burdick talked about the campaign and her committment to serve.

"It's been a great opportunity for me to be reminded each day of explaining to people why I want to continue on," said Burdick. "It's a little bit out of my comfort zone to say I want to do this, but if you want the job, you have to convince people that you want the job and that you are qualified for the job."

HCAM News also spoke with outgoing chairman RJ Dourney, who said he was going to stay involved.I

"I' certainly will stay involved," said Dourney. "i'll pay attention......but it's so easy to step back when you have so many bright and passionate volunteers serving in so many capacities."

Planning Board member John Coutinho was on hand and talked about his work on the Planning Board and urged residents to get involved.

"Please join, help us, "said Coutinho, "instead of just complaining about town governemnt. Become part of it. That's how I started.

About an hour and half after the polls closed, Assistant Town Clerk Deb Holbrook read the results. Herr, Burdick and Aghababian emerged as the winners.

Several candidates who were still at the Middle School were sworn in by Town Clerk Ann Click that night. After the longer than expected wait for final results, the crowd at the Middle School left quickly. HCAM did not have a chance to talk to any of the winners that night, but caught up with Selectman Brian Herr at Tuesday night's Board of Selectmen's meeting.

"I'm glad that campaing is over," said Herr who is looking forward to getting back to work on the Board of Selectmen and getting things done for Hopkinton.

One of his goals for the upcoming year is to get a hockey rink built in Hopkinton over the nexr 12-14 months. While he admits it's an aggressive plan, Herr feels it can be accomplished. He also hopes to make sure that the budget process for next year goes smoothly.

"I really appreciate the opportunity to serve again," said Herr and he encouraged residents with comments or concerns to contact the board.
