Relay for Life is a event that happens in many communities across the world to raise awareness and to celebrate the lives of those who have battled and/or have lost their fight with cancer. And under sunny, but cold skies on May 11th, Hopkinton kicked off their relay at the High School. Over 700 participants consisting of over 80 teams, attended the all-night event, which raised over $150,000, about $20,000 more than last year's total. During the event, members of each team take turns walking laps around the track. There are also two special laps throughout the course of the night; the survivors lap, which honors those who have overcome the disease, and the luminaria ceremony, a lap of silence dedicated to the memory of those who have passed away from cancer.
For those not walking the track, there were plenty of activities during the night, including live music, an opportunity to get science teacher Michael Graeber wet in the dunk tank, food from Snappy Dogs, and games around the field.
