Save the Day at Hopkinton High

By Stephanie Kane, News Producer

For Emily Day, May 3 was her day. The high school senior, currently undergoing treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma, was at the cafeteria during lunch as fellow classmates and teachers chopped and buzzed-off their hair in support of her. The "Save the Day" fundraiser, which benefits the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, was organized by Wellness Teacher Diane Maillet.

Haircuts were provided by by Ann-Michele's Uptown Hair Design. And those willing to cut their hair included biology teacher Bryan King, School Resource Officer Phil Powers, who shaved both his signature mustache and head, physics teacher Liz Petruska, who cut off 10 inches of hair, and Junior David DerKinderen, who chopped off his long locks. And even Emily got into the action of lending a helping hand.

Also on sale at the fundraiser, "Save the Day" t-shirts and bracelets. A limited number are still available and can be purchased by contacting the High School. So far, Team Emily has raised over $4,000 in support of Dana Farber. And the team will be participating in a road race in June as well.
