"Take Your Child to the Library Day" A Success

By Michelle Murdock, Freelance Writer

On Saturday, February 2, the Hopkinton Public Library held its first "Take Your Child to the Library Day". The theme for the day was Groundhog Day and included several groundhog day stories from Mrs. K, a chance for the children to make their own groundhog craft and music with Mrs. Grady.

Denise Kofran, the Children's Librarian, was the one who planned the event after having heard about the grassroots initiative started by librarians in Connecticut.. Nadine Lipman, a children's librarian in Waterford, Connecticut, came up with the idea for "Take Your Child to the Library Day"and selected the first Saturday in February as the annual day of celebration.

In Hopkinton, due to the time of year, Kofron tied the day to a groundhog theme, reading several stories related to groundhogs. Once the stories were complete, it was time for a groundhog craft. Tables with supplies were set up in the library and with the help of Girl Scouts from Troop 72948, children were able to make their own groundhogs which were then used when it was time for music with Mrs. Grady the Music Lady.

The event was the first time that the library held a weekend children's story time and both Denise Kofron and Susan Marshall were pleased with the turnout saying the weekend gave parents who work during the week a chance to participate in what is usually a week day event. For Adult Services Librarian Susan Marshall, it was a chance to bring her grandchildren to work without having to man the front desk.

While the official "Take Your Child to the Library Day" is over, it's possible that future weekend events at the library are not. In the meantime, there are still plenty of events planned. Mrs. Grady the Music Lady will be back in March, April and May, so be sure to visit the library website for more details.
