Video Highlights: MLK Day of Giving Back

By Stephanie Kane, News Producer

On most school holidays, it isn't that uncommon to find kids watching TV, playing video games, or catching up on some school work. But beginning in 2008, resident Linda Katz helped create an event that made Martin Luther King Jr. Day a day on, rather than a day off, for the community. Using one of MLK's famous quotes, "life's most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing for others?" as a springboard, Katz created a day dedicated to community service. For the past two years, Margie Wiggin has overseen the planning of the day. She hoped to inspire those in attendance this year about the power of overcoming hardships through song.

King's message of overcoming racial injustice was part of his tireless fight to help others. To expand upon that subject, Colleen McBride, a Hopkinton resident who volunteered at a orphanage in Kenya last year, and Tim Kilduff gave moving speeches about the power of service.

Both McBride and Kilduff challenged everyone to find a cause that they are passionate about and take a proactive stance.

And to exemplify the message of King, McBride, and Kilduff, along with residents gathered in the Middle School gym to make a difference in the lives of others. Service projects included donating blood, making cancer care bags, making blankets for Greyhound Friends, and sending positive words of inspiration to those at Serenity House.

To hear excerpts from the two speeches, watch the HCAM News video below.
