Video: Jeff Doherty of Angel's Garden Center gives Mulching Tips

By Tom Nappi, News Director

Jeff Doherty of Angel's Garden Center had some advice for those looking to Mulch their property. Jeff advises to know how many square feet you will be mulching to determine if it is a better value to buy mulch by the truckload or bag; "1 cubic yard at 3 inches will cover 110 square feet or 10X11 area." Measuring the square feet and depth of the bed will help you determine how many cubic yards of mulch you will need. (Example; 5 foot deep bed that's 30 feet wide = 150 square feet)

Jeff recommended using a pitch fork over a shovel as it will give a more even covering and it will be easier to sift it out along the area. Jeff mentioned that if you end up needing 9 bags or more than you are already paying more than you would in bulk. He mentioned it would take about 14 bags to make 1 cubic yard; "lugging around 9 bags or 18 bags in your car and finding out more than what you could have had it delivered for, you could end up saving yourself some money."
