Video: Regional Dive Team Trains in Ashland

By Tom Nappi, News Director

The Massachusetts Fire District 14 dive team trained at Aggregate Quarry in Ashland. Divers, tenders, command and support were on hand to assist the divers in reaching depths nearly 70 feet. The team practiced search patterns and techniques as well as tested depth capabilities. The regional dive team is made up of several towns including Framingham, Hudson, Ashland, Hopkinton, Northborough, Maynard, Natick, Sherborn, Weston, Lincoln and Holliston.

Vinnie Zanella of the Framingham Fire department mentioned, one of the goals of the day was to test the depth capabilities of each diver; "these training drills tell us each divers capabilities, weather he's a deep diver of 60 feet plus or a shore based diver 0 to 30 feet, 30 feet to an atmosphere, people that have trouble with their sinuses can't go below that 1st atmosphere." The dive team also trained by finding various objects that were hidden in the quarry.

Deputy Chief of the Hopkinton Fire Department, Stephen Slaman mentioned that Hopkinton averages 2-4 deployments a summer for the dive team. Slaman stated the regional dive rescue team has expanded from covering 6 to 22 communities and deployment of the team is expected to increase. "We just brought in 10 new divers from the northern part of the district."
