By Tom Nappi, News Director

The Hopkinton 300th Anniversary Committee hosted Tom A.C. Ellis J.R., a book author who has done countless research and wrote about the Civil War in many local communities including Framingham, Medway, Millis and Hopkinton. Tom told stories of what life was like during the Civil War in Hopkinton and talked about the harsh reality of what was a very tough time in U.S. History. In one of the many stories during the presentation he mentioned; "The Doctors got the nickname of Saw Bones because with a shattered arm or shattered leg there was nothing you could do but saw it off."

Tom stated he initially became interested in the research doing Civil War reenactments with his son and organizing events; "Once I retired, I realized there are a lot of towns that have a very rich history like Hopkinton and nothings written." Tom mentioned it takes him a year and a half to research a town and that documenting the history could be used in the future as a valuable resource. Tom has wrote many books telling the history of local towns during the Civil War including "Hopkinton's Civil War Service".
