A Visit to the HPTA Green Expo

By Michelle Murdock, Freelance Writer

Hopkinton High School was the setting for the HPTA's Green Expo on Saturday, April 30th. With over thirty different vendors and booths, residents had multiple opportunities to learn how to reduce their environmental footprint.

A sculpture called the "Bottle House" encouraged visitors to sign pledges and say no to plastic bottles and bags.

Representatives from Angel's Garden Center were on hand to demontrate how to pot plants and children left with a plant to take home.

Several vendors showcased their natural products, including including Busy Bee Lip Balm, made from beeswax.

Entertainment was provided by the High School Jazz Band and choral groups, and the highlight of the day was the Green Glam Fashion Show. Put on by members of the Let's Sing! Dance! Act! troupe, the models made their outfits from recycled materials and then walked the Green Glam Runway to show them off.

Recycled materials were also used by visitors to the Sparks Art Stuido booth. Another interesting exhibit, run by the Discovery Museum in Acton, used infrared light to measure leaks in a model of a house that a local group of local Girl Scouts then tried to fix. Known as the "Dream Green" exhibit, it was debuted by the Discovery Museum in January and has now become a mobile exhibit. Barbara Stella, Travelling Science Instructor, was on hand to explain the demonstration.

Jaysharee Dattar, the organizer of the event, hoped that residents learned something by attending the Expo.

"I hope that they take away one thing," said Dattar. "That they can change in their lives to make the their lives a little bit greener and tread a little bit lighter on our planet. If they can do that, that would make me very happy."
