Weston Nurseries recently celebrated a milestone that many businesses never reach; it's 90th year in business. The garden center was started by Peter John Mezitt in Weston in 1923 and moved to Hopkinton in 1960, making Hopkinton it's permanent location the following year. In 1996, current president Peter Mezitt joined the company, extending the family-run company into to its fourth generation.
In order to celebrate Weston Nurseries' heritage, those who attended the 1920s themed party had a chance to interact with staff members to learn about the company's extensive history.
Mezitt estimates that collectively Weston Nurseries employees total 949 years of experience working there. One of the company's longest tenured employees, Henry Schmidt, has been working there since 1966.
Another part of Weston Nurseries' history stems from their creation of over 200 unique hybridized plants, including an azalea named after Schmidt called "Henry's Triumph".
Mezitt says that one of the things that has most changed about the gardening industry, particularly in the last twenty five years, is how specialized it has become. When the business first started, most garden centers, including Weston Nurseries, planted, grew, and sold everything. Now, the market has shifted where garden centers don't always focus on every step of the process for every plant.
Mezitt appreciates all of those who have shared in the company's history over the years and have helped it grow and prosper.
In 2011, Weston Nurseries opened up a second location in Chelmsford Massachusetts.
