The following is a statement from Hopkinton Police Chief Joseph Bennett:
“The Hopkinton Police Department is aware of recent incidents related to the ‘Senior Assassin’ game being played by some of our high school seniors. While we recognize that this tradition is often seen as a lighthearted way to celebrate the end of the school year, it has resulted in behaviors that raise serious safety concerns.
“The nature of this game — which often involves ambushing others with water guns, wearing disguises and engaging in pursuit scenarios — can lead to misunderstandings and potentially dangerous consequences.
“Most notably, we recently received a report of a student flashing what appeared to be a gun from a vehicle, alarming community members. Such reports can prompt a significant police response, placing the students, community and our own officers at risk.
“We urge students and families to fully consider the implications of this game. What may seem like harmless fun can quickly escalate into a serious situation. We ask parents and guardians to speak with their children about making safe and responsible choices during this time of celebration.
“The Hopkinton Police Department wants nothing more than for our seniors to enjoy their final weeks of high school safely. We encourage everyone to find safer, more appropriate ways to celebrate this milestone.
“As always, we remain committed to the safety and well-being of all members of the Hopkinton community.”
