Chief Gary Daugherty Jr. reports that the Hopkinton Fire Department and mutual aid partners extinguished a two-alarm fire in a commercial building on Sunday afternoon.
On Sunday, Sept. 7, at approximately 3:49 p.m., Hopkinton Fire was dispatched to 8-18 Avenue E following an automatic fire alarm activation reported by an alarm company.
Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the building and located an active fire on the first floor and in one of the laboratories at Element.
A working fire assignment was struck, bringing multiple mutual aid companies to the scene, including Westborough, Ashland, Southborough, Upton, Bellingham, Hopedale, Milford, and Framingham. Medway provided station coverage. A second alarm was transmitted at about 4:34 p.m.
Firefighters made entry and located heavy fire in a room on the first floor.
Lithium-ion batteries are believed to have been present in the area where the fire occurred, but the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Hopkinton firefighters worked alongside mutual aid partners to bring the fire under control. No injuries were reported.
The fire caused extensive damage to the building, including water damage in the basement.
The Hopkinton Police Department, building inspector, wiring inspector, and a building representative responded to assist on scene. Eversource also responded to provide utility support.
“Thanks to the quick work of our crews, along with significant mutual aid support, we were able to contain the fire to its area of origin and prevent further damage throughout the building,” said Chief Daughtery Jr. “We are grateful for the assistance of our neighboring departments.”
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Hopkinton Fire Department and State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
